PEOPLE
WHO USE SERVICES
The aim of this website is to raise awareness of Sunderland’s
Safeguarding Adults Procedures. These Procedures exist to help people
at risk of abuse, or who are being abused, to gain support to reduce
that risk so they can live a safer life, free from abuse.
Who do the Procedures cover?
Those adults supported under the Safeguarding Adults Procedures
are those who are:
- 18 years and over and who use social care or health services, (or may be eligible to use
them)
- and who - may be unable to take care of themselves or be unable to protect
themselves against serious harm or exploitation
- and whose - independence and well-being would be at risk if they did not receive
appropriate health or social care support
This might mean, for example, adults who are frail, either physically
or mentally due to old age, adults with mental ill-health, adults
with physical disabilities and/or sensory impairments, and adults
with learning disabilities. It might also include adults who misuse
substances, adults whose behaviour or condition puts them at risk
of abuse, and some victims of domestic violence.
Individuals who do not use services might still be able to be supported
under the Safeguarding Adults Procedures as might some who are meeting
their assessed care needs through Direct Payments or Self-Funded
Placements, if they fit the description above.
